FDA Approves Dental Device for Migraine Sufferers

admin @ 2:22 am

More than 23 million people older than 12 years of age suffer severe migraine headaches. The social and economic impact of migraines is staggering, with estimates approaching 17.2 billion per year lost in productivity.

Treatments for migraine headaches typically involve drugs such as Imitrex but now there is a promising new treatment recently approved by the FDA that uses no drugs. It’s called the NTI Suppression System (NTI-tss).

In clinical trials, the NTI-tss device considerably reduced or eliminated migraine and associated tension headache pain. It is considered breakthrough technology because there is no risk of side effects compared to pharmaceutical migraine treatments.

Patients who experience migraines typically contract their temporal muscles (which close and clench the jaw) during sleep on average 14 times more intensely than those who do not suffer migraines. Typical sufferers awake nearly every morning with varying degrees of headache pain but have come to accept it as normal and unremarkable.

The NTI-tss device is a small, removable device that fits over the front teeth only, which makes it easily tolerated for people who have a gag reflex problem. A dentist custom makes the device in the office, usually in one visit. The patient then wears it while sleeping. There is a daytime device available as well. With the NTI-tss device in place the intense activity of the temporal muscles is reduced by 1/3 by preventing contact between the back teeth. By reducing this neuromuscular activity, migraine attacks are reduced or prevented altogether, as well as the associated tension-type headaches.

One NTI-tss trial compared the effect of the device to a control device on medically diagnosed migraine sufferers. Each subject had at least 2 migraines per month and was taking physician prescribed Imitrex.

After just eight weeks of using the NTI-tss:

.There were no side-effects and no new pain
.82% of NTI-tss users had a 77% average reduction in migraine events
.Imitrex use was reduced by almost 50%
.Nausea episodes were reduced by 78%
.Light-sensitive episodes were reduced by 66%
.Sound sensitive episodes were reduced by 68%

General dentists can fabricate and deliver the NTI-tss device right in their offices. Many dentists across the country are already experienced with NTI-tss use after having been providing it over the past two years for the prevention of TMJ syndrome, clenching and grinding.

Teeth For Life…Episode 2: Diet (how to ward off the evil decay spirits)

admin @ 7:12 pm

Would you like to never get another hole?? It is possible. In fact, if you follow a few rules, you are almost guaranteed never to get another cavity.

Here’s how it works. Everybody has bugs in their mouths. Decay happens when certain of these bugs turn sugar into acid. This acid causes decay.

Now the good guy is your saliva. The saliva neutralizes the acid produced by the bugs (stick around, this will get more interesting). It takes 2 hours, however, after having anything with sugar for your teeth to stop dissolving.

So, your teeth are dissolving for two hours after you have anything with sugar. If you have three meals a day and nothing in between your teeth dissolve for six hours a day. They seem to cope OK with this. Every snack between meals (and that includes fruit) adds an extra two hours to your dissolving time. If you’ve got enough fingers count up how many meals or snacks or drinks with sugar you have a day. Multiply by two (use toes if necessary) and you get how much of the day your teeth spend rotting.

If it’s 8 hours or more, start putting a glass of water next to your bed to get used to where your teeth will spend time in the future.

Before all you chocoholics reach for the razor blades, there is a simple solution. All you have to do is bundle up all your snacks and include them with the three major meals. Hey, Presto!!! No more decay. If you must gorge yourself between meals, some things are OK. Most dairy products and vegetables are fine to have as snacks. You can drink water, milk, and coffee/tea (with artifical sweeteners). Diet soft drinks are sort of OK but don’t overdo it.

It sounds easy and it is. The rest is up to you.

Episode 1: The Big Picture

OK…. Do you want your real teeth to remain in your mouth forever, as opposed to the ones you have to leave in a glass of water next to your bed at night?? “What do I have to do?” you ask. “Excellent question” I answer.

Below is an overview of the important rules to follow. Some of these ideas are expanded upon elsewhere, but this is a quick introduction for the attention-span-challenged.

Diet: If you have three meals a day and nothing that contains sugar in between, it is almost impossible to get decay. The more stuff with sugar you have between meals (fruit, juice, sugared coffee, soft drinks etc…) the more holes you are likely to get.

Cleaning: To prevent gum disease you gotta floss. Once a day is enough. It makes your breath nice and your gums strong.

Strong Fillings: If you have old fillings or your teeth are starting to crack, it is important to have them strengthened before problems occur. If you wait until things begin to hurt, treatment can become much more complicated.

Regular Visits: Even when everything is fixed as well as possible you’ve still gotta come visit us. Mostly because we like seeing you, but also to pick up little things before they become big things.

So that’s it in a nutshell. There is ton of information available on these and other issues. If your brain isn’t hurting yet stay tuned for our next blog for episode #2 on Diet and how to ward off the evil decay spirits….

Listen to this!!

admin @ 10:28 pm

Have you ever wished that visits to your dental office could be accompanied by your favorite classical, country or rock tunes? Or how about your favorite movie or television show? If so, the American Dental Association (ADA) has good news for you!!! According to the ADA, patients under anesthesia who listen to music in the dental chair experience lower blood pressure and pulse rates than patients under anesthesia alone. Music or your favorite DVD at the dentist’s office seems to lower levels of stress-related hormones as well. Please feel free to bring your favorite CD or DVD to your next visit at Dr. Hale’s office or choose from our extensive DVD or CD list we have here. A relaxed patient in the dental chair is good news for everyone!!!

Your Dentist Can Save Your Life

admin @ 12:44 am

Let’s discuss a serious topic…Have you ever seen pictures of patients after oral cancer surgery? Do you have a family member or loved one who has been through oral cancer surgery? If so you know how disfiguring it can be. Sometimes it can involve removal of part of the tongue and surrounding tissue or in severe circumstances can involve removal of jawbone (mandible) or even bone that holds upper teeth (maxilla). Many times reconstructive surgery is done by rebuilding the area with tissue or bone from other areas of the body or you may have to wear a prosthesis. You can only imagine the enormous challenges this leaves the patient to face. Tasks that were once pleasurable like eating become a frustration which in turn could lead to medical problems due to extreme weight loss.

Did you know that oral cancer is one of the deadliest cancers? The death rate is so high not because it is hard to treat but because this cancer is routinely discovered late in its development. Only half of the people who are diagnosed will be alive five years later. Pretty scary statistic! The key to surviving this silent killer is early diagnosis. That is why at Smiles by Hale we provide oral cancer screenings. If your dental office does not check for oral cancer at every hygiene appointment demand they do so. It can save your life!

What are some of the signs of oral cancer…..
.Canker sore or similar lesion
.Whiteish film on inside of the mouth, gums or tongue
.Discoloration
.Unilateral persistant headache
.Lump or mass which can be felt inside mouth or neck

Any lesion that is not healing should be examined by your dentist and if necessary Dr. Hale can take a biopsy. It is painless, inexpensive and takes little time. Isn’t your piece of mind worth it?
